Also Mineral wealth plays an important role in the Iraqi national economy, foremost among which is oil. Before the country began exporting oil, it was an economy based on agricultural production in large measure and less on trade. Investigations indicate the presence of minerals in different regions of Iraq, such as the Western Desert and some governorates of the northern region, and only oil, phosphate, sulfur, tar, and limestone were exploited.
